CaixaBank’s executive committee appoints Gonzalo Gortázar as VidaCaixa’s Non-Executive Chairman

  • CaixaBank’s CEO succeeds Jordi Gual, whose term has expired.
  • The VidaCaixa Board of Directors has thanked Gual for his dedication during his tenure as chairman, in which the entity has consolidated its leadership and enhanced its contribution to making CaixaBank’s bancassurance model a success in terms of operations and customer service.
  • VidaCaixa, the leading insurance company in Spain and a wholly owned subsidiary of CaixaBank, has Javier Valle as its Managing Director.

CaixaBank’s Executive Committee, the sole shareholder of VidaCaixa, has appointed Gonzalo Gortázar as non-executive chairman of the insurance entity, succeeding Jordi Gual, whose term of office is due to expire. The appointment will be effective from 15 April.

VidaCaixa’s Board of Directors expressed its appreciation for Jordi Gual’s contribution to the growth of VidaCaixa and highlighted that, during his tenure as chairman, the company consolidated its leadership in the Spanish insurance sector and strengthened its contribution to making the CaixaBank Group’s bancassurance model a success in both operations and customer service.

VidaCaixa is CaixaBank’s wholly owned life and pensions insurance subsidiary

The company, whose CEO is Javier Valle, who leads the insurance sector and holds a 49.92% stake in SegurCaixa Adeslas, is focused on contributing to the financial well-being of its clients through products such as pension plans, savings insurance, and life insurance. In Portugal, VidaCaixa holds 100% of the share capital of BPI Vida e Pensões.

Gonzalo Gortázar’s Professional Background

Gortázar has been the CEO of CaixaBank since June 2014. He also serves as chairman of CaixaBank Payments & Consumer and as a board member of Banco BPI. Gortázar previously served as VidaCaixa’s chairman from 2014 to 2021. Before this, he was CaixaBank’s Chief Financial Officer and, between 2009 and June 2011, the General Manager of Criteria CaixaCorp.

A graduate in Law and Business Studies from the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE) and MBA with distinction from the INSEAD business school, Gonzalo Gortázar began his professional career at Bank of America and later held various roles in Morgan Stanley’s investment banking division, leading the financial institutions group in Europe until mid-2009, when he joined Criteria.

He has also served as First Vice-Chairman of Repsol and as a board member of Inbursa Financial Group, Erste Bank, SegurCaixa Adeslas, Abertis, Port Aventura, and Saba.
