The Executive Committee of CaixaBank, the bank chaired by José Ignacio Goirigolzarri and directed by Gonzalo Gortázar, has appointed Jordi Gual, the organisation’s former chairman, as non-executive chairman of VidaCaixa, a fully-owned subsidiary of CaixaBank and Spain’s leading insurance company.
After leaving the role of Chairman of CaixaBank upon completion of the merger with Bankia, Jordi Gual has rejoined IESE Business School as Professor of Economics. Gual joined the IESE faculty in 1987, where he developed his academic record until 2005, when he joined “la Caixa” Group.
CaixaBank’s CEO and current chairman of VidaCaixa, Gonzalo Gortázar, will focus his efforts on CaixaBank and on leading the process of integration following the merger with Bankia.
Tomás Muniesa will continue as vice-chairman of the insurance company and Javier Valle, CEO of VidaCaixa and member of the CaixaBank’s Management Committee, will continue to be the chief executive of the company.
VidaCaixa is CaixaBank’s fully-owned insurance subsidiary, and Spain’s leading insurance company. It also holds 49.92% of SegurCaixaAdeslas.
Jordi Gual’s career and academic record
Prior to his appointment as Chairman of CaixaBank in June 2016, Jordi Gual was Chief Economist and Head of Strategic Planning and Research at CaixaBank and Director-General of Planning and Strategic Development at CriteriaCaixa.
Jordi Gual holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a degree in Economics and Business with an Extraordinary Award from the University of Barcelona. He is Professor of Economics at IESE Business School and Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London.
He is also Vice President of the Círculo de Economía and he serves on the board of CEDE Foundation.
In 2019 he was awarded with the Gold Badge by the Spanish Institute of Financial Analysts, having previously received the European Investment Bank Research Prize in 1999. He has also been a Fulbright Scholar.
