CaixaBank has approved a credit line of over €125 million in the form of guarantees granted to Astilleros Gondán for the construction of the largest vessel built to date by this shipyard based in Asturias. It is a 120-metre-long ocean energy vessel designed to carry out a wide range of offshore operations, especially the inspection, maintenance and repair of offshore wind farms, as well as the laying and repair of submarine cables. The ship will be operated by the Norwegian multipurpose vessel Edda Fjord, part of the Østensjø Group, for which Astilleros Gondán has already built more than 20 vessels.
The new vessel will have the capacity to accommodate 180 people and will have a hybrid propulsion system that will incorporate battery technology and heat recovery systems. The ship has been designed to reduce energy consumption in order to significantly lower its carbon footprint and environmental impact.
According to the forecasts from Astilleros Gondán, the ship will be delivered by the end of 2027 and around 400 workers will be involved in its construction. The good working relationship and trust between CaixaBank and Astilleros Gondán has made it possible to finalise the deal in record time, allowing the shipyard to secure this contract.
This new operation adds to the current boom in the Spanish shipbuilding industry and demonstrates CaixaBank's support for this sector, which in 2024 has completed deals with Spanish shipowners and shipyards worth €238 million.
